Anna-Eva Bergman – Fragments of Nature

Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) is regarded as one of the leading modernists of post-war Nordic art. Her work is characterised by an abstract visual language rooted in the structures of nature. Bergman’s art is defined by a distinctive sense of materiality. Her use of copper, gold, and silver leaf gives the paintings a tactile and sensuous presence, where surface and light are as integral as form.

Fragments of Nature offers an engaging introduction to Bergman’s artistic practice and visual universe. Richly illustrated throughout, it includes an essay and afterword by writer and art historian Hilde Mørch, and a foreword by artist and collector Morten Viskum.

This edition builds on the sold-out special edition from 2022, featuring new material, an updated visual design, and a newly written afterword. Here, art historian Hilde Mørch describes the significant activity surrounding Bergman’s artistic legacy since the first publication. The first edition was released in connection with the exhibition Anna-Eva Bergman at Galleri Star, Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, curated by Morten Viskum.

The book features images of works from Kunstsilo / Tangen Collection, Fondation Hartung-Bergman, Christen Sveaas’ Art Foundation, Sparebankstiftelsen DNB, The Gundersen Collection, and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, offering a unique insight into Bergman’s artistic practice. Its design and material choices resonate with Bergman’s artistic vision, allowing the works to emerge with clarity and presence. The publication has been designed, printed, and bound in Norway, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and sustainable production.

The project is generously supported by the Bergesen Foundation.
